Paint the Glorious Palette of Tuscany in September at Castello di Spannocchia.

Painting the Glorious Palette of Tuscany

October 6 - 13, 2014

Capture the colors of Tuscany in this small group workshop with Evelyn Dunphy at Castello di Spannocchia. Accommodations are in the Villa in the Castello.

All rooms in the Villa have been booked for the workshop. There are three additional rooms available to our workshop in the Fattoria. These rooms are equally appealing and have shared baths. The total workshop fee with these rooms is $2265.00. If you take advantage of the early registration savings of $200.00 with your deposit paid by December 31, 2013, the total will be $2065.00.

Castello di Spannocchia is a rustic and beautiful 1100 acre organic farm nestled in the Tuscan hillside, twelve miles from Sienna. The atmosphere is friendly, comfortable and informal. The kitchen embraces the slow food mission of local, organic meat and produce. Our eyes and our brushes will delight in the rustic structures of the main castle and its gardens as well as scattered villas, hidden ruins, vineyards and olive groves. All of this estate offers a wealth of painting opportunities.

WORKSHOP FEE: $2490.00 private room with bath in Villa. Please send a non-refundable deposit of $250.00 to hold your place. A savings of $200.00 applies if remainder of deposit ($750.00)is made by December 31, 2013.

Balance must be paid by May 1st, 2014.

• Non-painting partner’s fee $1500.00. See early registration savings above.

· Tuition – daily class in and around the estate of Spannocchia di Castello.

• Room and Full Board, including lunch – your choice of room in the Villa.

Spannocchia serves a 4-course dinner Monday - Friday evenings and Sunday evening at 7:30 PM. Dinner begins at 7:30 with the primo piatto (first course), a pasta, soup or risotto made with seasonal vegetables or meat. The secondo piatto (main course) is a meat—usually pork, beef, venison, or chicken, served with a contorno (side dish) of seasonal vegetables from the Spannocchia vegetable garden and insalata (green salad) that can be dressed to taste with Spannocchia-produced olive oil and vinegar. Dolce (dessert)— panna cotta, tiramisu, cantucci , and vin santo for example--is served at the end of the meal. Bread, wine, and water are included in the meal as well.

On Saturday night workshop participants will have dinner in one of the nearby villages. This is the only meal that is not covered by the workshop fee.

• An historical tour of the Castello with one of the staff members of Tenuta di Spannocchia will be scheduled for two hours after breakfast on the first morning of the program.

Description of Painting Workshop

A plein air watercolor workshop that will engage your senses, move your painting to a higher level of personal expression and provide you with as much personal attention as you would like. The class will paint each day at one of the beautiful locations on the property. Imagine the choices: the ancient walls of the Villa and Fattoria, the acres of organic farm gardens, the hills and vineyards, or the Villa flower garden. Watercolor is the perfect medium to express the light and atmosphere of this lovely place.

Plein air painting is exhilarating, and challenging! This workshop will teach you how to simplify shapes, exaggerate your passion, minimize the unessential, crop, compose, and build a strong composition that enables you to enjoy seeing pigments mix and dance on your paper. Be a poet rather than a reporter, paint light and color, and shadow, and develop your ability to really “see”.

Each day will include demonstrations; both of the subject matter chosen for the day, and also of specific issues that students may encounter . Evelyn comments that “my intention is to expand the student’s vocabulary of watercolor techniques so that they are able to paint their personal statement of what they see and feel about a specific location”.

There will be an opportunity for students to sign up for a traditional Tuscan cooking class on one day from 9:00 – 2:30 including lunch. There is an additional fee for this course. Students have the option to participate in other activities on any day of the workshops if they prefer. A day trip to Siena (just twelve miles away) and San Gimignano is also an option. The instructor will be teaching every day of the workshop for those who want to concentrate on painting.

I want to thank you for the wonderful experience in Tuscany. I could not have imagined a more wonderful, painterly time with a group of like-minded artists and a great teacher who meets you where you are and is always present to guide and support. This is the best of all the workshops I have been to and hope to do it again soon. Thank you. Sharon

“If you want a workshop with a talented, dedicated teacher who is also a beautiful painter, sign up with Evelyn Dunphy”. A student at a recent workshop at Frederic Church’s camp on Millinocket Lake, Maine.

“I am just now realizing how much I learned from you during the workshop at Milford House. Things that I thought I knew, but really did not understand have come to life to me, and my work shows it”. A student in a recent workshop.
